Let's pause the Hawaii adventures for now. I assure you that we will resume exploring other islands in Hawaii soon :)

Here is a proposed route for a fast (or leisurely) drive from the Bay Area to Santa Barbara. We'll visit Solvang, Pismo Beach, and other hidden treasures en route.

Day 1:

If you plan to take this trip over a regular weekend, consider beginning on Friday evening. Depending on your preferred start time, hotel budget, and willingness to drive, here are some options to choose from:

  • Option 1

Consider staying at or near Pismo Beach or San Luis Obispo overnight. Accommodations there are more affordable. The drive from San Jose takes

approximately 3 hours.

  • Option 2

Embark on the full journey to Santa Barbara, which is about a 5-hour drive. Make sure to make pit stops at Solvang and Pismo Beach on the return trip, or simply unwind in Santa Barbara.

Day 2:

Should you choose Option 1, you can wake up to a stunning sunrise at Pismo Beach.

Pismo Beach is renowned for its beautiful beaches, making it a favored spot for tourists looking for a blend of leisure and outdoor adventures. Visitors can enjoy surfing, fishing, and horseback riding right on the beach.

While there, you can also checkout the Oceano Dunes, one of the few places in California where you can drive vehicles on the beach.

Following a relaxing afternoon at Pismo Beach, proceed with your drive towards Santa Barbara.

We will be visiting the delightful city of Solvang next, situated in the Santa Ynez Valley within Santa Barbara County. Renowned for its unique Danish-influenced buildings, Solvang provides guests with a special atmosphere reminiscent of Denmark right in the midst of California. Established in 1911 by Danish immigrants, the city was created to honor and promote their cultural roots.

Renowned for its windmills, half-timbered houses, and Danish bakeries serving classic pastries such as aebleskiver and kringle, Solvang is a well-known destination. Additionally, the town boasts a variety of museums, such as the Elverhøj Museum of History & Art, where visitors can learn about Danish culture and the rich history of Solvang.

Along with its Danish allure, Solvang is encircled by exquisite vineyards and wineries, which attracts many wine lovers to the area.

Today, we will be spending the rest of the day in Solvang and end our day with a nice meal at one of the many restaurants there.

After dinner, we chose to drive to the accommodation we had already booked for the second night in Santa Barbara.

You could possibly opting to stay at one of the delightful hotels or inns that showcase the town's Danish roots, offering a comfortable accommodation.

Day 3:

Today, we were fortunate to witness another stunning sunrise while staying close to the beach in Santa Barbara.

Santa Barbara is famous for its Mediterranean-inspired architecture, beautiful beaches, and lively cultural environment. It is commonly known as the "American Riviera," combining natural beauty, historical allure, and contemporary facilities.

Our day began with a leisurely walk along State Street in the center of downtown Santa Barbara. State Street is filled with boutique shops, eateries, and art galleries, creating a vibrant atmosphere ideal for shopping, dining, and observing people.

After that, we visited Stearns Wharf, a renowned pier that is well-liked for its dining options, shopping opportunities, and breathtaking views of the coastline. It serves as an excellent starting point for discovering Santa Barbara's waterfront.

Below are some restaurants we have sampled:

We began our journey back home in the evening and arrived around midnight, just in time to make it to the office on Monday!

Should you have an extra day, consider staying overnight in Santa Barbara and commencing your journey back the following day. En route, take a break at Morro Bay. Renowned for its iconic Morro Rock, a 576-foot volcanic plug that majestically emerges from the Pacific Ocean, Morro Bay is a favored spot for nature enthusiasts, outdoor lovers, and individuals in search of a serene retreat.

Below is a google map display of the entire journey.

Although there are other interesting stops on the route, they will take more time to explore. You can choose to add them to this schedule or create a new one if you want to visit them at a more relaxed pace. Some of these stops are best visited during specific times of the year, so please consider this.

Some of the notable stops are:

Carrizo Plain National Monument is a vast and remote area located in eastern San Luis Obispo County. It is famous for its spectacular wildflower displays, which occur typically in the spring, particularly after a rainy season. The bloom creates a vibrant carpet of colors across the plains, attracting photographers and nature enthusiasts.

Sensorio is a contemporary art installation located in Paso Robles, California. It’s known for its stunning, immersive light art exhibits that transform the landscape into a vibrant, interactive experience

Advance reservations are often required, especially during peak times or special events. It’s a good idea to check the Sensorio website for current ticket prices, hours of operation, and any special events or exhibits.

Hearst Castle is a historic mansion located in San Simeon, California, along the picturesque Central Coast. Designed by architect Julia Morgan and built for media magnate William Randolph Hearst, the castle is renowned for its grandeur, opulence, and architectural significance
