As you all know (or maybe not all) bay area is huge! So will divide it across different posts.
This one is dedicated to some highlights in and around San Fransisco.
Here is a sample itinerary which covers San Francisco, Sausalito, and Muir Woods.
Day 1:
Start the day with the city tour on a hop-on-hop-off bus.
We drove to San Francisco from South bay, about an hours drive. We parked near pier 39, at the public parking garage. It is a expensive one since we didn't check the rates, other spots etc in advance (perils of being young and foolish)
Here's a helpful tip: You have the option to reserve a parking spot in the garage in advance and save $40! Alternatively, you can search for street parking. Another option is to take the Bart from the south bay to the city to bypass traffic and parking difficulties. However, please be aware that the timings and connectivity from the south bay may not be ideal.

Board the bus from Pier 39/Fisherman's Wharf area,
We just did the day tour, taking our time at different spots. This was made easier by the fact that we were not time bound and had our own transportation to go back home.
We dedicated a considerable amount of time to exploring Golden Gate Park, which offers a wide range of attractions.

All these places are worth a visit if you have time.
Day 2: Muir Woods

On the second day, we took a drive to Muir Woods in Marin County, situated to the north of San Francisco.
Named after the naturalist John Muir, the monument was established in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt.
Known for its stunning old-growth coast Redwood/Sequoia trees, Muir Woods offers a serene and majestic environment that attracts nature lovers, hikers, and tourists from around the world.
The park features several well-maintained trails suitable for various skill levels. The most popular trails include:
Main Trail: An easy, paved path that winds through the heart of the redwood grove.
Bohemian Grove Trail: A moderate trail offering a more secluded experience.
Canopy View Trail: A more challenging hike with scenic views.

The park has a visitor center that provides information about the redwoods and the park's history. Facilities include restrooms, a café, and a gift shop.
Make sure to set aside a full day for exploring Muir Woods. Aim to arrive early and either venture to Mount Tamalpias for a breathtaking sunset or return to San Francisco and visit Sausalito in the evening for a pleasant dinner and leisurely walk.
Some Tips:
Parking and Shuttle: Parking is limited and often requires a reservation. Alternatively, a shuttle service is available from nearby locations.
Weather: The park is often cool and damp, even in summer, so dressing in layers is advisable.
Day 3: Sausalito

Even if you made a quick dinner stop at Sausalito on the previous day, it is still worth exploring on its own.
You can either drive to Sausalito or take a scenic ferry from San Fransisco to get here.
For those biking enthusiasts seeking adventure, you have the option to bike from Fisherman's Wharf to Sausalito and then take the ferry back. The journey covers approximately 8 miles, starting at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco and cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge to the Ferry pier in Sausalito. Typically, the entire trip takes around 2 to 3 hours.
Known for its stunning waterfront views, charming houseboats, and artistic community, Sausalito is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.
Enjoy breathtaking views of the San Francisco skyline, Alcatraz Island, and the Bay Area. The waterfront is an ideal spot for photography, picnics, and leisurely strolls.
Below are a few activities you can engage in:
Vibrant arts scene with numerous galleries showcasing the work of local artists. The downtown area is also home to many boutiques, offering a variety of unique items and souvenirs.
An array of dining options, from waterfront seafood restaurants to cozy cafes. Fresh seafood and California cuisine are highlights. Sausalito is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. Activities include sailing, kayaking, biking, and hiking in the nearby Marin Headlands and Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
Explore historical landmarks such as the Bay Model Visitor Center, which features a large-scale model of the San Francisco Bay and Delta, and the historic Fort Baker.
It's difficult to cover all the locations in and around San Francisco in just one post. Stay tuned for upcoming posts on various places to discover.
